Kestrel meal choices are strongly determined by what is available. American Kestrels feed mainly on insects, mice, voles, lizards, and snakes. From these images you could believe that mice and voles were most common where I was observing. Often the adult that captures prey, even during nesting season, will eat a portion of the prey before delivering it to their mate, or nestlings. During nesting the male may eat part of the prey before delivering it to the female, who will then eat part of it before delivering it to the nest.
