I have been impressed by looking at my photos and seeing how much control birds have over their wing and tail feathers in flight. Especially the tail feathers. They tuck the tal feathers up for straight flights, then spread them wide for turning and stopping. Or, so it appears to me. Falcons are known as the fighter pilots of in-flight conrol so I have selected a group of in-flight shots of a Prairie Falcon in Cruise Control, Search and Destroy and Full Stop.I have tried to find a few different angles of view. Check out the ways the tail feathers are used in flight to slow down for a landing, or are tucked in for speed. Then give a moments thought to all the muscles required to control all those feathers.
Resized.
